Lizzy Smith
My name is Lizzy Smith, I am a clinical mental health counseling graduate student at the University of the Cumberlands entering into my practicum and internship era. I am not new to the mental health field however, as I am also a Positive Behavior Support Specialist for MPW clients and a behavior technician accruing hours for BCBA licensure.
In addition to my pursuit of a Masters of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at UC, I currently hold a Masters of Science in General Psychology with a concentration in Applied Behavior Analysis from Eastern Kentucky University as well as a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology with a Concentration on Child and Adolescent Development from Southern New Hampshire University.
I have gained the majority of my experience through internships and employment through Stephens Behavioral Consulting and Counseling services over the past two years although my engagement in the mental health field expands across approximately 18 years with involvement in CASA of the River Region, Big Brother, Big Sister, Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky, and Isaiah House.
I approach counseling through an integrative lens that blends behavioral methods (ABA, CBT, DBT, ACT) with expressive and creative techniques such as Play Therapy. I’m grounded in person-centered and existential philosophies, which means I value authenticity, cultural humility, and tailoring interventions to each client’s individuality. In practice, I intend to create a supportive space where clients feel seen, empowered, and actively involved in their growth.
My desire for these approaches aligns with various aspects in my own mental wellbeing practices including gardening, hiking, sound therapy, breath work, earth tending and nature in general.
