Family Therapy

When working with children we often do not work with just the child alone but with the whole family unit. Your therapist will help the family assess what brought them to counseling, concerns of the identified patient, and how to work collaboratively with the family. A treatment plan will be developed based on this initial assessment with input from the family . Working with children can be complex due to the nature of the presenting problems, the complexities of the family, or the child’s ability to express what their needs are. Our therapists take a variety of approaches rather than a one size fits all approach to anaylyze the situation and apply evidenced based therapeutic approaches. We also take into consideration your child’s age, personality, strengths, struggles, history, as well as strengths and barriers your family may have. It also is important to point out what should be obvious in most cases: that a child’s struggles also can involve the child’s family members which is why when working with the child we will work collaboratively with the family. This approach allows the family members to develop tools to use outside of the therapy sessions in order to make greater progress.

Individual Therapy

Adults or children may seek individual counseling where you will be paired with a qualified mental health therapist whom will meet with you individually to determine your presenting problems, strengths, needs, and determine an appropriate set of goals at that time. Your therapist will take time to build rapport and ensure that it is a good match between clinician and the individual. The techniques that your therapist may use during this time are all evidence based and backed by research in order to provide you the quality care you deserve.

Group Therapy

Group therapy may be available for you whether you are seeking a social skills group for a child, a parenting group, or a diagnosis specific group (anxiety, depression, postpartum anxiety or depression), or to help with a difficult time. A group setting allows individuals to seek and receive support not just from the therapist in charge of the group but also from their peers in the group. Within a child social skills group your child will have the opportunity to practice skills learned in an individual session or with their CSA in a way that cannot be done individually. Adults seeking groups may benefit from having support from others, knowing they are not alone, building confidence by being able to share or help others within the group, learn from others, and have a safe space to share their experiences, struggles, and victories with others who understand.

Couples Counseling

Couples counseling is a type of psychotherapy in which a therapist with clinical experience working with couples (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist- LMFT), helps two people involved in a romantic relationship gain insight into their relationship, resolve conflict and improve relationship satisfaction utilizing a variety of therapeutic interventions. Although the practice of couples therapy may vary depending on the therapist’s theoretical orientation, all couples therapy tends to involve the following general elements. Your LMFT will work with the couple to develop individualized goals for their time in therapy as well as assessing progress or a need to change goals as therapy progresses. Active participation of both individuals within the relationship is essential.

Telehealth

Telehealth is mental health therapy provided through live interactive audio visual technology. For some individuals getting to the office may not be an option for a number of reasons. At Stephens Behavior Consulting, we are proud to offer (through HIPAA compliant technology) teleheatlh services. When determining if this is an appropriate service for you, you and your clinician will set up a time to discuss how this may be beneficial based on your treatment goals, progress in treatment, and needs at this time; as well as any barriers to participation in teleheath rather than in office sessions. At this time all individuals with medicaid and medicare have access through their insurance provider for this service. Many private insurance plans also allow coverage for this; but due to coverage varying from plan to plan we will verify this benefit prior to starting to use it. This service is currently available to anyone within the state of Kentucky, based on the state in which your therapist is licensed.

Community Supports

Community Supports are available through one of our qualified Community Support Associate (CSA) to individuals (Adults and Children) with Medicaid whom are also receiving mental health counseling. This service is designed to help the individual develop, utilize, and generalize skills in multiple settings. By working collaboratively with you or your child’s mental health therapist, specific goals are developed and an individualized treatment plan is created. You and your CSA will work in the setting where you are needing to work on these skills (home, school, community, office). Your progress will be assessed regularly and new goals will be determined as you meet the goals on your original plan.

Play Therapy

APT defines play therapy as “the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development.” Therapists trained in play therapy allow children to utilize play to help them heal and process relationships within their lives. This can be done individually, in groups, or within the context of a family.
